Erin Coates

Erin is a Perth-based artist who works with video, drawing and sculpture, often combining these elements to make immersive or interactive installations. She is interested in built environments and, by using ideas drawn from body horror and science fiction, creates works that playfully question the way we are patterned to read and use urban space.

A key consideration in much of Erin’s artwork, whether installation or screen-based, is the way the viewer’s body relates to it; the specific viewing angle required to see the work, the way sound is felt in the body, or the scale of the imagery in relation to the scale of the body watching it. In a similar way, the videos contain two elements in tension with each other; a specific built space and a body or bodies occupying it.
