Interdisciplinary artist Consuelo Cavaniglia is Curator and Judge for the John Fries Award 2017 and 2018.
Consuelo’s work focuses on how we see and understand space. She is the 2016 recipient of the NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) from Create NSW. She has exhibited nationally and undertook a residency in the Pilbara through FORM in 2016 followed by a NES residency in Iceland in 2018.
Over the last 15 years she has worked across a range of roles in contemporary art spaces, universities, regional art centres and artist-led spaces. Originally from Perth, she has been Coordinator of significant national art prizes, Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award and the Cossack Art Award, Art Consultant at Artsource, Exhibitions Coordinator at Fremantle Arts Centre, and Lecturer at Curtin University of Technology.
Currently based in Sydney, she has an MFA from Sydney College of the Arts and is a lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. She was selected in 2015 to present at Cities in a Climate of Change, the International Award for Public Art Conference in Auckland, and has been on the board of artist-run spaces Firstdraft and 55 Sydenham Road. Independent curatorial projects have consistently flanked her practice – she has developed projects in galleries, museums and public spaces.
